How this works

Light and Balanced use image recompression: embedded images are downsized to match how big they actually appear on the page, re-encoded with mozjpeg, then a qpdf-wasm pass repacks the PDF's structure. Text, fonts, vectors, form fields, and bookmarks are all preserved.

Strong uses a different technique for much bigger savings (often 80–90%): each page is rendered to a JPEG and rebuilt with an invisible text layer overlaid at the original character positions. Text stays selectable and searchable, but form widgets, signature fields, bookmarks, annotations, and accessibility tags are not preserved. Use Light or Balanced if you need to keep those.
